This quiz shows a blank map of China divided into 34 areas: 23 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 4 municipalities and 2 special administrative regions. You type the name of each area, and the map colors that area in place.
Two province names differ by one letter: Shanxi and Shaanxi. The quiz needs the exact name for each. Use the progress panel to track each category separately.
How to play
Type names in any order. A correct name colors the area on the map at once.
You can start to type right away. You do not need to click the answer box first.
Short names count. "Tibet" and "Xizang" score the same region, and "Macao" and "Macau" score the same region.
Older Western names count. "Canton" scores Guangdong, and "Szechuan" scores Sichuan.
A timer tracks your run. The quiz saves your best score and best time.
If you are stuck, use the give up button. The map then shows the areas you missed.
What counts in this quiz
All 34 areas the map draws, Hong Kong and Macau included.
The map includes Taiwan as one of the 34 areas, because the source map draws it. Taiwan's political status is disputed.
What's not included — and why
Cities below province level are not answers. Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Xi'an do not score — Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Chongqing do, because they are municipalities.
Good to know
Chongqing is the largest municipality. More than 30 million people live in its administrative area.
Xinjiang is the largest division by area. It covers about one sixth of China.
Guangdong has more than 125 million people — the most of any province.
Shanxi means "west of the mountains". Shaanxi is a different province directly to its west.
