Every animal that can be the Daily Animal

Daily Animal draws its answer from this list of 339 animals — nothing else can ever be the secret. It is published on purpose: guessing is only fair when you know what you are guessing from. A much wider set of 997 animals is accepted as a guess, so naming a real animal is never punished, even when it could not be the answer.

Entries are named the way people talk. “Tiger” is the entry and Bengal, Siberian and Sumatran are aliases of it; there is one entry for “Ant” rather than one per species. Only living animals are in play. Taxonomy follows the traditional school ranks, and a blank cell means the group is genuinely too mixed to call — the game shows those as inactive tiles rather than guessing.

Two columns are worth spelling out, because every ambiguous case in them is an argument. Weight is a typical adult, whichever sex — not a record specimen, and for a group entry like “Ant” it is a representative member. The game only ever compares two animals, so what matters is that a moose outweighs a mouse, not the exact figure. Legs means the legs an animal moves on along the ground: wings and arms don’t count, so a bird and a bat have two and a gorilla has four; an animal that lost its hind limbs has none, so whales, snakes and manatees are zero; and a cephalopod’s arms do count, because it has nothing else — an octopus has eight and a squid ten. Anything above ten shows as “Many”.

Covering is what the animal is covered in as an adult, described the way you would describe it by touch. Hair of any density counts as fur, so a whale, an elephant and a rhinoceros are all “bare skin” because that is what anyone would say. A shark’s skin is scales — its denticles are literally modified scales. An armadillo’s carapace and a snail’s shell are both “shell”. Venom separates injecting from ingesting: venomous means it injects a toxin through a bite, sting or spine, poisonous means it is only dangerous to touch or to eat, and an animal that does both is filed as venomous. It is no longer a tile on the board — 92% of the answer list is “none”, so it went green on nearly every guess while ruling almost nothing out — but it still appears on the reveal card, and “none” is not a promise that the animal is safe to annoy.

Biome is where the animal is most at home, picked from Ocean, Freshwater, Wetlands, Rainforest, Forest, Grassland, Desert, Mountains, Polar & tundra and Cities & farmland. One biome, not a range map: a leopard turns up in half of them and is filed under grassland, because that is where you picture it. A domesticate is filed where it actually lives, so a house cat is cities & farmland rather than the wildcat’s grassland.

Pattern and Colour are the columns worth studying, along with biome — they are the only ones the tree of life cannot already imply, so they are where a guess narrows the field fastest. They cut straight across the branches: a zebra and a tiger are both striped from completely different orders, a leopard and a ladybug both spotted from different classes. Pattern is one of plain, striped, banded, spotted, patched, mottled or iridescent — bands go all the way round the body and stripes do not, spots are countable and mottling is not, and a patch is bigger than the animal’s head. Colour is whichever one covers most of the animal, and multicolour is reserved for three or more bold colours with none of them winning. Both describe the adult as it is usually pictured, which is the same rule Weight uses: the mallard is the green-headed drake, the arctic fox is white, and a dog is brown rather than “it depends on the breed”.

Status is the IUCN Red List category, taken from Wikidata rather than from IUCN directly. It runs Least concern → Near threatened → Vulnerable → Endangered → Critically endangered, and the game compares it as a ladder, so the tile tells you whether the secret animal is closer to extinction than your guess. A blank is common and expected: pets and farm animals are not assessed, insects and other invertebrates almost never are, and a group entry like “Shark” covers hundreds of species with no single answer.
