Egypt has 27 governorates. This quiz shows a blank map of Egypt. You type the name of each governorate, and the map colors that governorate in place.
Most people know the city names. The desert governorates, such as Matrouh and the New Valley, are the hard part of this quiz.
How to play
- Type names in any order. A correct name colors the governorate on the map at once.
- You can start to type right away. You do not need to click the answer box first.
- English and Arabic transliterations both count. "Cairo" and "Al Qahirah" score the same governorate.
- Common alternate spellings count. "Fayoum" scores Faiyum, and "Assiut" scores Asyut.
- A timer tracks your run. The quiz saves your best score and best time.
- If you are stuck, use the give up button. The map then shows the governorates you missed.

What's not included — and why
- Cities that do not name a governorate are not answers. Sharm El Sheikh does not score — South Sinai does.
Good to know
- The New Valley is the largest governorate. It covers almost half of Egypt.
- Cairo has the most people of the 27 governorates.
- Luxor is the youngest governorate. It split from Qena in 2009.
- Nearly all Egyptians live in the Nile valley and delta, in a small share of the country's area.
