France Regions Quiz — Rules & What Counts
France reorganized its regions in 2016. Thirteen regions now cover the mainland and Corsica. This quiz shows a blank map of France. You type the name of each region, and the map colors that region in place.
Some regions kept short historic names, such as Brittany and Normandy. Others received long merged names, such as Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The long names are the hard part of this quiz.
How to play
Type region names in any order. A correct name colors the region on the map at once.
You can start to type right away. You do not need to click the answer box first.
French and English names both count. "Bretagne" and "Brittany" score the same region.
Accents are not required. "Ile de France" counts for Île-de-France.
Well-known old region names also count. "Aquitaine" scores Nouvelle-Aquitaine, and "Provence" scores Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
A timer tracks your run. The quiz saves your best score and best time.
What counts in this quiz
The 13 regions of metropolitan France, Corsica included.
What's not included — and why
The five overseas regions — Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Réunion and Mayotte — are not on this map.
The 96 departments are a different administrative level and are not answers here.
Good to know
Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes has about 8 million people — more than many European countries.
Île-de-France is the smallest mainland region by area but holds Paris and about 12 million people.
Corsica has a special status: it is a territorial collectivity, but it counts as one of the 13 regions.
Seven of the 13 regions are mergers created in the 2016 reform.
