German States Quiz — Rules & What Counts
Germany is a federation of 16 states. Germans call them Bundesländer. This quiz shows a blank map of Germany. You type the name of each state, and the map colors that state in place.
The set mixes very large states, such as Bavaria, with three city-states: Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen. Most players find the last few states in the middle of the country the hardest.
How to play
Type state names in any order. A correct name colors the state on the map at once.
You can start to type right away. You do not need to click the answer box first.
English and German names both count. "Bavaria" and "Bayern" score the same state.
A timer tracks your run. The quiz saves your best score and best time.
If you are stuck, use the give up button. The map then shows the states you missed.
What counts in this quiz
Exactly the 16 federal states of Germany — from Baden-Württemberg to Thuringia.
English names, German names, and common transliterations such as "Baden-Wuerttemberg" all count.
What's not included — and why
Regions below state level are not on the map. Districts (Landkreise) and cities other than the three city-states are not answers.
Good to know
Bremen is the smallest state. It consists of two separate cities: Bremen and Bremerhaven.
Bavaria is the largest state by area. It covers about one fifth of Germany.
Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen are city-states: one city that is also a full federal state.
Five of the 16 states joined the federation in 1990, when East and West Germany reunified.
