Presidents of India Quiz: Rules & What Counts
The president of India is the head of state. This quiz shows a portrait of every president since the republic began in 1950, and you type the names.
The grid has 15 cards, one per person, in order. Each card wears its ordinal up front. The name and the years in office appear when you solve it.
Most players land Abdul Kalam and the recent presidents. The run-killer is the middle of the list, the 1970s and 1980s.
How to play
- Just start typing. The quiz checks your answer at every keystroke. There is no submit button.
- Surnames are enough: "kalam" and "murmu" both work. Type a fuller name when you want a specific card.
- Spelling is forgiving. Capitals, periods and accents are ignored, and common misspellings such as "Zakir Hussain" and "Prathibha Patil" are accepted.
- The timer starts at your first keystroke and counts up. Give Up ends the run and shows every portrait you missed. Progress saves automatically.
What counts in this quiz
- All 15 people elected president, from Rajendra Prasad in 1950 to Droupadi Murmu today.
- One card per person. V. V. Giri is on the board for the term he was elected to in 1969.
- Portraits are freely licensed. The early presidents are public-domain photographs. The recent ones are official portraits from the President's Secretariat, under the Government Open Data Licence of India.
What's not included, and why
- Acting presidents have no card. Mohammad Hidayatullah and B. D. Jatti each held the office for a few weeks after a president died.
- Prime ministers are not here. They have a quiz of their own: Prime Ministers of India.
- The governors-general who served before 1950 are not presidents, so they have no card.
Good to know
- Rajendra Prasad is the only person elected president twice. He held the office for 12 years, longer than anyone since.
- Two presidents died in office: Zakir Husain in 1969 and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed in 1977.
- Neelam Sanjiva Reddy is the only president elected unopposed. Every other election had a contest.
- A. P. J. Abdul Kalam was a rocket scientist. He led India's missile programme before he led the country.
- Pratibha Patil was the first woman president, in 2007. Droupadi Murmu was the second, in 2022.
