Japan Prefectures Quiz — Rules & What Counts
Japan divides into 47 prefectures. This quiz shows a blank map of Japan. You type the name of each prefecture, and the map colors that prefecture in place.
The progress panel groups the prefectures into the 8 traditional regions, from Hokkaido in the north to Kyushu and Okinawa in the south. Use the groups to find the parts you still miss.
How to play
Type prefecture names in any order. A correct name colors the prefecture on the map at once.
You can start to type right away. You do not need to click the answer box first.
Macrons are not required. "Osaka" counts for Ōsaka, and "Oita" counts for Ōita.
The suffix is not required. Type "Aichi", not "Aichi Prefecture".
A timer tracks your run. The quiz saves your best score and best time.
If you are stuck, use the give up button. The map then shows the prefectures you missed.
What counts in this quiz
All 47 prefectures, in their common English spelling.
What's not included — and why
Cities are not answers, unless a prefecture has the same name. Yokohama, Kobe and Sapporo do not score.
The 8 regions are not answers. Kanto and Kansai are group names in the panel, not prefectures.
Good to know
Hokkaido is the largest prefecture. It is about 22 percent of Japan by area.
Kagawa is the smallest prefecture by area, and it faces the Inland Sea.
Tokyo has the most people. More than 13 million live inside the prefecture.
Four names differ from the plain "ken" form: Tokyo is a "to", Hokkaido is a "do", and Osaka and Kyoto are each a "fu".
Okinawa is the southernmost prefecture. It lies closer to Taipei than to Tokyo.
