Missing Vowels shows one physics word with every vowel removed. An underscore marks each vowel the word lost.
"_NTR_PY" is ENTROPY. "M_M_NT_M" is MOMENTUM.
A run lasts three minutes. Name as many words as you can in that time.
How to play
- Read the word in the middle of the screen. Each underscore is one vowel.
- Type the word. The game accepts the word as soon as you spell it — you do not press Enter.
- A correct word scores one point and draws the next word.
- Select Skip to draw the next word. A skip costs no point, but it costs time.
- The clock starts on your first keystroke, so you can read the first word first.
- The bar under the header drains as the clock runs. It turns red for the last 20 seconds.
- The game saves your progress. You can close the page and continue within one hour.
- Select Review words on the result screen to see every word of the run and its answer.
What counts in this quiz
- The pool holds 120 words from school physics — mechanics, heat, waves, light, electricity, magnetism, particles and units.
- Every word is one word. "Half life" and "black hole" are two words, so they are not in the pool.
- No two words in the pool share a pattern, so the pool makes 120 different puzzles. That is the highest score.
- Each run deals the puzzles in a random order, and no pattern repeats inside one run.
- Score is one point per word named. Skipped words score nothing.
- The leaderboard ranks the number of words named in the three minutes.
What's not included — and why
- The five vowels are A, E, I, O and U. Y is a consonant here, so ENERGY shows as "_N_RGY".
- Only the exact spelling counts. The mask shows every consonant, so it tells you the letters the answer needs.
- The pool uses British spellings, because the rest of the site does. POLARISATION takes an S, and the mask shows that S.
- Symbols are not used. The pool holds the names of quantities and units, not their letters.
- Capital letters do not matter. "photon" and "PHOTON" both count.
Good to know
- The longest words in the pool are SEMICONDUCTOR and SUPERPOSITION, at 13 letters each.
- The shortest have four letters: MASS, WORK, HEAT, WAVE, ECHO, BEAM, LENS, ATOM, MUON, VOLT and WATT.
- The hardest words are the ones with many vowels. AMPERE shows as "_MP_R_" and loses half of its letters.
- Eight of the words are units named after people: NEWTON, JOULE, WATT, VOLT, KELVIN, AMPERE, PASCAL and TESLA.
