Order by Car Price — From a Mirage to a One-Off Rolls-Royce
Each card in this quiz names a car model. The board starts with one card already on it. The quiz then gives you one card at a time, and you put each card in the row from the cheapest to the most expensive.
A correct placement shows the price and keeps the card on the board. One wrong placement ends the run. You cannot move a card after you place it, so each choice is final.
Each run deals 20 cars from a pool of 76 models, so no two runs are the same. The pool spans three orders of magnitude: a Mitsubishi Mirage lists for $16,695, and the one-off Rolls-Royce Boat Tail cost about $28,000,000. The ends are easy. The middle is not: is a Range Rover more than a GMC Hummer EV? Is a Ferrari Roma more than a Lamborghini Urus?
How to play
The row is sorted by price. The cheapest car is at one end and the most expensive car is at the other end.
One card starts on the board. Its price is shown.
The quiz gives you one card at a time. Put it in the gap where you think it belongs.
A correct placement shows the price of the car. The card stays on the board and the quiz gives you the next card.
A wrong placement ends the run. The quiz then shows you the correct gap.
You cannot move a card after you place it.
Each run deals 20 cars at random from the pool of 76 models.
Your score is the number of cards on the board at the end. The maximum score is 20.
A perfect run places all 20 cards with no mistake.
What counts in this quiz
Each price is the car's list price in US dollars.
Cars still on sale use the base list price, before options and taxes.
Cars no longer on sale use the list price when the car was new. The quiz does not adjust old prices for inflation.
No two cars in the pool are closer than about 5 percent in price, so the order between any two cards is never a coin flip.
What's not included — and why
List prices change from year to year. The quiz uses the figure most reference works give for each model.
One-off cars have no official list price. The quiz uses the sale price that the maker or the press reported.
The quiz compares price only. It does not compare speed, size or sales.
Good to know
The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail cost about 1,700 times as much as a Mitsubishi Mirage.
The McLaren F1 listed for $815,000 in the 1990s. A good example now sells for about 25 times that figure.
