Tap the timeline at a year inside the war. Within 25 years counts.
Rules & what counts
Famous Wars Timeline: Place 20 Wars in the Right Years
This quiz gives you one war at a time and a timeline from 1300 to 2000. You tap the timeline at the years the war was fought. The card tells you where the war happened and how many years it lasted. It does not tell you when.
Every war is placed, right or wrong. After each tap the timeline shows the true years of the war, so the board fills up as you play and each new war has more landmarks around it. Your score is the number of wars you placed correctly.
The World Wars are easy. The 1600s and 1700s are the hard part: most people know the Thirty Years' War came before Napoleon, but few can put it within 25 years.
How to play
The timeline runs from 1300 to 2000. A tick marks every 50 years and a label marks every century.
The quiz gives you one war at a time. The card shows the name of the war, where it was fought and how many years it lasted.
Tap the timeline at a year you think is inside the war. On a computer, the year under the pointer shows before you click.
A tap counts when the year is inside the true span of the war, or within 25 years of its first or last year.
After each tap the timeline shows the true years of the war, in green for a hit and in red for a miss.
You place every war in the run. There are no lives.
Your score is the number of hits. The maximum score is 20.
The clock runs from your first drop. A faster run breaks a tie on the leaderboard.
What counts in this quiz
Each run deals 20 wars from a pool of 26, so two runs are rarely the same.
The pool runs from the Hundred Years' War (1337 to 1453) to the Gulf War (1990 to 1991).
The years are the ones most reference works give. Where historians give two end years, the quiz uses the later one. The 25-year margin covers the difference.
The Cold War counts as a war on this board, from 1947 to 1991.
What's not included, and why
Wars that began before 1300 or ended after 2000 are not on this board. The ancient and medieval wars need a timeline of their own.
Revolutions and rebellions without a war in their common name are not in the pool.
Good to know
The Hundred Years' War lasted 116 years. The Six-Day War lasted six days.
The Thirty Years' War and the Eighty Years' War ended in the same year, 1648, with the Peace of Westphalia.
The Korean War has no peace treaty. The armistice of 1953 still stands.
