UK Counties & Districts Quiz — Rules & What Counts
This is the hardcore map quiz of the Country Regions category. The map shows the United Kingdom divided into 232 areas: English counties, unitary authorities and boroughs, the 32 Scottish council areas, the 22 Welsh principal areas, and the 26 Northern Ireland districts.
Nobody clears this map by accident. Full marks require the London boroughs, the small metropolitan boroughs of the English north, and the districts of Northern Ireland. Use the progress panel to track each nation separately.
How to play
Type area names in any order. A correct name colors the area on the map at once.
You can start to type right away. You do not need to click the answer box first.
Common short names count. "Hull" scores Kingston upon Hull, and "Stoke" scores Stoke-on-Trent.
Zoom into the map to see the small city areas. London alone contains 33 answers.
A timer tracks your run. The quiz saves your best score and best time.
If you are stuck, use the give up button. The map then shows the areas you missed.
What counts in this quiz
All 232 areas the map draws: 152 in England, 32 in Scotland, 22 in Wales and 26 in Northern Ireland.
Both "Derry" and "Londonderry" count for the same district. "Western Isles", "Outer Hebrides" and "Eilean Siar" count for the same council area.
What's not included — and why
The Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are not on the map. They are Crown Dependencies, not parts of the United Kingdom.
Northern Ireland uses the 26 districts that existed before the 2015 reform, because the map draws those boundaries. The 11 new super-districts are not answers.
Historic counties that no longer exist as administrative areas, such as Middlesex, are not answers.
Good to know
The City of London and Westminster are separate areas. The City of London is less than 3 square kilometers and has fewer than 10,000 residents.
Highland, the largest council area in Scotland, is bigger than Wales.
Rutland is the smallest historic county in England. Its motto is "Multum in Parvo" — much in little.
Rhondda Cynon Taf in Wales combines the names of three river valleys.
