The 9 provinces of South Africa
South Africa has 9 provinces. This page lists all of them.
The table shows the English name first. The local name is accepted as an answer too, and it appears in the second column.
English names and local names
The quiz shows English names, because that is what most players type. It accepts the local name as well.
Accent marks do not matter. The quiz folds accents before it compares, so a name typed without them still counts.
Abbreviations are not accepted. A short code is ambiguous, and one code often matches the start of another name.
About the provinces
The nine provinces date from 1994, when they replaced the four provinces of the apartheid era.
Gauteng is the smallest province by area and has the most people. The Northern Cape is the largest and has the fewest.
South Africa has three capitals in three provinces: Pretoria, Cape Town and Bloemfontein.
