This quiz lists the 1,000 biggest cities in the United States. Name as many of them as you can.
The map starts empty. Each city that you name shows as a dot at its location, and a bigger city gets a bigger dot.
Most players name the big cities quickly. The suburbs and the smaller cities of each state are the real test.
How to play
Start to type. The answer bar checks each letter, so you do not press Enter.
When two or more cities have the same name, one answer names all of them. Five cities on the list are called Springfield.
Some names are the start of a longer name, such as Miami and Miami Beach. The shorter name scores immediately. If you continue to type the longer name, the longer name scores too.
Point to a dot, or tap it, to see the city's rank, state and population.
Other names and common misspellings are accepted. "Philly" counts for Philadelphia.
The timer counts up. Select give up to show the cities that you missed and to save your score.
What counts in this quiz
The 1,000 incorporated places with the most people, from the Census Bureau estimates for 1 July 2025 (Vintage 2025).
An incorporated place is a city, town or village that has its own local government.
Honolulu is on the list. Hawaii has no incorporated cities, so the Census Bureau counts the Urban Honolulu area instead.
A city that joined its county counts with the city part only, as the Census Bureau counts it. Nashville and Indianapolis are examples.
The smallest city on the list has about 41,000 people.
Each dot is at the point that the Census Bureau gives for the city in its 2025 Gazetteer.
What's not included, and why
Townships in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan are not on the list, and neither are the towns of New England. The Census Bureau does not count them as places, although some have more than 100,000 people.
Census-designated places are not on the list. These areas have no city government. Paradise in Nevada and East Los Angeles are examples.
Cities in Puerto Rico and the other territories are not on the list.
Metropolitan areas are not used. Each city counts with the people inside its own limits.
Good to know
Every state has at least one city on the list.
California has 203 cities on the list, more than Texas and Florida together.
New York has more people than Los Angeles and Chicago together.
Only two cities on the list are outside the lower 48 states: Anchorage and Honolulu.
