Every country in this quiz has one thing in common: not a single meter of ocean coastline. You start with just one revealed country as an anchor — Chad — and type your way to every other landlocked state on Earth.
This quiz counts 45 landlocked countries. That's one more than the commonly quoted 44, because our world dataset includes Kosovo, which has no coast either. The breakdown: 16 in Africa, 15 in Europe, 12 in Asia, and just 2 in South America. North America and Oceania have none at all.

What counts in this quiz
A country counts if it has no coastline on the open ocean. Bordering the Caspian Sea doesn't disqualify anyone — the Caspian is an enclosed body of water, which is why Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan all count as landlocked.
All 45 landlocked members of the 197-country world dataset, including microstates such as Vatican City and Liechtenstein.
Kosovo counts — it's in our world dataset and has no coast, which nudges the total to 45 instead of the textbook 44.
What's not included — and why
Landlocked entities that aren't in the 197-country dataset — South Ossetia and Transnistria have no coastline, but they lack broad recognition as states, so they're not answers here.
Good to know
Only two countries are doubly landlocked — surrounded exclusively by other landlocked countries: Liechtenstein and Uzbekistan.
Kazakhstan is the world's largest landlocked country, bigger than all of Western Europe.
Bolivia still maintains a navy on Lake Titicaca, more than a century after losing its coastline to Chile in the War of the Pacific.
Lesotho is not just landlocked but entirely surrounded by a single country, South Africa.
