Missing Vowels: Movies — Rules & What Counts
Missing Vowels shows one movie title with every vowel removed. An underscore marks each vowel the title lost.
A movie title is usually more than one word, so this quiz also marks the spaces. A dot sits in each gap between two words.
"J_R_SS_C · P_RK" is JURASSIC PARK. "TH_ G_DF_TH_R" is THE GODFATHER.
A run lasts three minutes. Name as many movies as you can in that time.
How to play
Read the title in the middle of the screen. Each underscore is one vowel and each dot is one space.
Type the title of the movie. The game accepts the title as soon as you spell it — you do not press Enter.
You can type the spaces or leave them out. "the godfather" and "thegodfather" both count.
A correct title scores one point and draws the next movie.
Select Skip to draw the next movie. A skip costs no point, but it costs time.
The clock starts on your first keystroke, so you can read the first title first.
The game saves your progress. You can close the page and continue within one hour.
Select Review words on the result screen to see every title of the run and its answer.
What counts in this quiz
The pool holds 167 well-known movies, from Casablanca to Barbie. It mixes blockbusters, classics, animation, horror and romance.
No two titles in the pool share a pattern, so every puzzle has exactly one answer.
Each run deals the puzzles in a random order, and no pattern repeats inside one run.
Score is one point per movie named. Skipped movies score nothing.
The leaderboard ranks the number of movies named in the three minutes.
What's not included — and why
The five vowels are A, E, I, O and U. Y is a consonant here, so MISERY shows as "M_S_RY".
Only the exact spelling counts. The mask shows every consonant, so it tells you the letters the answer needs.
Titles that need punctuation are not in the pool. The mask can hold letters and spaces only, so Schindler's List, Spider-Man and 2001: A Space Odyssey are left out instead of being misspelled.
Each movie uses its main title alone. A subtitle after a colon is not part of the answer.
Capital letters do not matter. "titanic" and "TITANIC" both count.
Good to know
This quiz shows no poster and no still. Movie artwork is under copyright, so every movie quiz on this site is built on words alone.
A title with many vowels loses the most. AKIRA shows as "_K_R_" and keeps one letter of five.
The longest pattern in the pool is THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, at 24 characters.
Consonants carry most of the information in written English. That is why you can still read a title with no vowels at all.
