Missing Vowels: Music Artists — Rules & What Counts
Missing Vowels shows the name of a band or a music artist with every vowel removed. An underscore marks each vowel the name lost.
A name is often more than one word, so this quiz also marks the spaces. A dot sits in each gap between two words.
"TH_ B__TL_S" is THE BEATLES. "Q___N" is QUEEN.
A run lasts three minutes. Name as many acts as you can in that time.
How to play
Read the name in the middle of the screen. Each underscore is one vowel and each dot is one space.
Type the name of the act. The game accepts the name as soon as you spell it — you do not press Enter.
You can type the spaces or leave them out. "the beatles" and "thebeatles" both count.
A correct name scores one point and draws the next act.
Select Skip to draw the next act. A skip costs no point, but it costs time.
The clock starts on your first keystroke, so you can read the first name first.
The game saves your progress. You can close the page and continue within one hour.
Select Review words on the result screen to see every name of the run and its answer.
What counts in this quiz
The pool holds 95 well-known acts, from Elvis Presley to Billie Eilish. It mixes rock bands, pop stars, rappers, DJs and soul legends.
No two names in the pool share a pattern, so every puzzle has exactly one answer.
Each run deals the puzzles in a random order, and no pattern repeats inside one run.
Score is one point per act named. Skipped acts score nothing.
The leaderboard ranks the number of acts named in the three minutes.
What's not included — and why
The five vowels are A, E, I, O and U. Y is a consonant here, so KANYE WEST shows as "K_NY_ · W_ST".
Only the exact spelling counts. The mask shows every consonant, so it tells you the letters the answer needs.
Names that need a digit or punctuation are not in the pool. The mask can hold letters and spaces only, so AC/DC, U2, Guns N' Roses and Maroon 5 are left out instead of being misspelled.
Accented names are written plain. The pool spells "Beyonce" and "Celine Dion", and the game accepts a guess with or without the accent.
Capital letters do not matter. "abba" and "ABBA" both count.
Good to know
The shortest names in the pool have four letters: ABBA, BLUR, CHER, ENYA and SEAL.
ABBA is the hardest short name. Its pattern is "_BB_" — the mask keeps only half of the name.
The longest name in the pool is RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, at 18 letters across three words.
The pool spans about seven decades of popular music, from the 1950s to the 2020s.
