Order TV Shows by Premiere Year — From I Love Lucy to Adolescence
Each card in this quiz names a TV show, its network and the kind of show it is. The board starts with one card already on it. The quiz then gives you one card at a time, and you put each card in the row from the oldest premiere to the newest.
A correct placement shows the year and keeps the card on the board. One wrong placement ends the run. You cannot move a card after you place it, so each choice is final.
The pool holds 58 famous TV shows and each run deals 20 of them, so two runs are never the same. The pool spans seventy years, from I Love Lucy in 1951 to Adolescence in 2025.
The cards carry no poster and no still. TV artwork is under copyright, so this quiz uses text only.
How to play
The row is sorted by premiere year. The oldest show is at one end and the newest show is at the other end.
One card starts on the board. Its year is shown.
The quiz gives you one card at a time. Put it in the gap where you think it belongs.
A correct placement shows the year the show premiered. The card stays on the board and the quiz gives you the next card.
A wrong placement ends the run. The quiz then shows you the correct gap.
You cannot move a card after you place it.
Your score is the number of cards on the board at the end. The maximum score is 20.
A perfect run places all 20 cards with no mistake.
What counts in this quiz
The year the FIRST EPISODE aired in the show's home country. Seinfeld is 1989, because its first episode aired in July 1989.
A remake uses the version its card names. The Office card says (US), and 2005 is its answer — the British original is not the card.
Two shows from the same year count as equal. The Simpsons and Seinfeld are both 1989, so the board takes either order.
One show per franchise. Star Trek is the 1966 original. Better Call Saul is its own card, because it is its own show with its own premiere.
What's not included — and why
Shows whose start year people argue about are not in the pool. Doctor Who is left out, because the 1963 original and the 2005 revival split the answer.
The year a show became famous does not decide the card. Breaking Bad found most of its audience years after 2008, and 2008 is still the answer.
The quiz does not rank the shows by quality or by viewers. The premiere year is the only measure.
Good to know
The Simpsons premiered as a Christmas special on December 17, 1989, and it has run ever since.
Seinfeld's first episode was called The Seinfeld Chronicles, and NBC almost did not order more.
Cheers ranked near the bottom of the ratings in its first season. It ended eleven years later as one of the most-watched shows on TV.
Squid Game became Netflix's most-watched series ever within a month of its premiere.
