Rules & what counts
Houseplant Quiz: Rules & What Counts
Name 40 popular houseplants from a photo. Each card shows the plant as it stands in a home or a shop: the leaves of a foliage plant, the bloom of a flowering one.
The first cards are the plants on every shelf: monstera, pothos, snake plant, fiddle-leaf fig, ZZ plant. The last cards are the two carnivores every garden centre sells.
A correct answer shows the botanical name of the plant under the trade name.
How to play
Start typing anywhere; the answer bar catches it automatically.
The game accepts a plant as soon as you spell it. You do not press Enter.
Each plant accepts its trade names and its genus: "Swiss cheese plant" for monstera, "devil's ivy" for pothos, "sansevieria" for snake plant.
Select a card to enlarge the photo.
Select Give up to see the plants you missed and to save your score.
What counts in this quiz
40 houseplants, from the monstera to the burro's tail.
Trade names, nursery names and the genus all count. "Pilea" and "Chinese money plant" open the same card.
A short form counts where people use it: "aloe", "jade", "ZZ", "orchid", "ivy".
The leaderboard ranks the number of plants named, then the time.
What's not included, and why
Only the exact spelling counts, with the common misspellings added by hand. There is no fuzzy matching.
Three cards are Dracaena species (snake plant, dragon tree, lucky bamboo), so the bare word "dracaena" opens no card. Three cards are figs, so the bare word "ficus" opens no card.
Cut flowers and garden flowers are in the Flower quiz, not here.
Good to know
Lucky bamboo is not a bamboo. It is a dracaena that grows in a glass of water.
The monstera gets its holes as it grows. A young plant has whole leaves.
The Venus flytrap counts: a trap closes only when an insect touches two hairs within about 20 seconds.
The ZZ plant can go for months without water. Its thick stems and underground tubers store it.
