Name the ten countries that make the most wine, ranked by the volume of the vintage in hectolitres, the unit the wine trade uses.
Italy, France and Spain make about half of the world's wine between them. The rest of the list is the New World (the United States, Australia, Argentina, South Africa, Chile) and the two smaller European makers, Germany and Portugal.
How to play
Pins are hidden, because a pin on Portugal or Chile would give the answer away. Use the numbered 1 to 10 rail; a correct guess flies onto the map.
Start typing anywhere and the answer bar matches live.
Alternate names count, so "USA" and "Italia" both score.
The timer counts up; Give up reveals the remaining countries and saves your score.
What counts in this quiz
Exactly 10 countries, ranked by the OIV figures for the 2025 vintage.
The figures are wine only. Grape juice and must do not count.
The top three have held their places for decades. The order in the middle of the list changes with the harvest, and the quiz follows the newest OIV report.
What's not included, and why
Wine consumption is a different list. China and the United Kingdom drink a great deal and grow little.
Georgia, where wine was first made 8,000 years ago, is far outside the top ten by volume.
Good to know
One hectolitre is 100 litres, about 133 bottles. Italy's vintage fills more than five billion bottles.
France made the most wine in the world for most of the 20th century. Italy passed it for good in the 2010s.
The 2024 vintage was the smallest since 1961, after frost, hail and drought hit both hemispheres.
