D&D Monster Grid puts monster traits on a 3×3 board. Each row has one trait, and each column has one trait.
Name one Dungeons & Dragons monster for each cell. The monster must have the row trait and the column trait: a Large undead, a fiend that flies, a chaotic monster with legendary actions.
A run has one board. The board gives you nine guesses for nine cells, so only a clean board fills completely.
The traits are the facts of the stat block: creature type, size, challenge rating, alignment, movement, legendary actions, spellcasting, damage immunities, senses, armor class, hit points and the first letter of the name.
How to play
Select a cell. The strip above the input shows the two traits the cell asks for.
Type a monster's name. A list shows the monsters the game knows that match your text.
Select a name from the list, or press Enter when only one name remains.
Each guess spends one of the nine, correct or wrong. A correct guess fills the cell with the monster's name and its type line. A wrong guess leaves the cell open.
A solved cell shows a counter, such as 1 of 14: how many monsters in the pool fit that cell.
You can use each monster one time per board.
When the board ends, the open cells show an example answer.
After the results, open View board and select any cell to see every monster that fits it, best known first.
Hold the pointer on a trait header to read what the trait means.
The timer starts on your first guess and counts up. Give Up ends the run and keeps your score.
The game saves your progress. You can close the page and continue within one hour.
What counts in this quiz
The answer pool holds 415 monsters: every monster of the SRD 5.1, plus the famous monsters outside it, such as the beholder, the mind flayer, the displacer beast and the demon lords.
Every true dragon counts at each of its four ages: a red dragon wyrmling, a young red dragon, an adult red dragon and an ancient red dragon are four answers with four challenge ratings.
A lycanthrope counts once, in its hybrid form. A vampire counts once, in its own form.
Alignment reads the printed alignment. Lawful covers lawful good, lawful neutral and lawful evil; Evil covers lawful evil, neutral evil and chaotic evil. A monster of any alignment fits no alignment trait.
Demon and Devil read the fiend's tag. Chromatic dragon and Metallic dragon read the dragon's colour. Shapechanger reads the tag: werewolves, doppelgangers, mimics, vampires and oni.
Flies, Swims, Burrows and Climbs read the speeds of the stat block. Legendary actions and Casts spells read the stat block's traits.
The immunity traits read the damage immunities: fire, cold, poison or lightning.
The game checks every board before play: each cell has at least two famous monsters and five known ones.
Score is one point per filled cell: 9 points for a perfect run.
The monster and spell data come from the System Reference Document 5.1 by Wizards of the Coast LLC, licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. The numbers are the 2014 rules.
What's not included, and why
The input only accepts names the game knows. A name outside the pool cannot be typed, so a wrong guess is always a wrong monster, not a spelling error.
A giant spider, a giant eagle and a giant ape are beasts, not giants. Giant is the creature type of hill giants, ogres, trolls and their kin.
The 2024 Monster Manual changed some challenge ratings, hit points and alignments. This quiz reads the 2014 numbers of the SRD 5.1.
Swarms and the ordinary people of the Monster Manual's appendix (commoner, guard, noble) are in the pool but never required: no board depends on them.
Good to know
The format comes from Immaculate Grid, a baseball game from 2023. TRIVI.GG plays it with the Monster Manual.
The randomizer draws each run's board from pre-checked boards, so two runs rarely show the same board.
The tarrasque and Tiamat share the highest challenge rating in the pool, 30. The crawling claw, at challenge rating 0, is the lowest with a name.
The beholder, the mind flayer, the displacer beast, the umber hulk, the githyanki, the yuan-ti, the slaadi, the kuo-toa and the carrion crawler are not in the SRD: Wizards of the Coast keeps those names as its own. Their published stat facts are in the pool all the same, because a fact is not a text.
Dungeons & Dragons is a trademark of Wizards of the Coast. TRIVI.GG is not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast, and the quizzes show none of its artwork.
