Rules & what counts
D&D Monsters A to Z Quiz: Rules & What Counts
Name one Dungeons & Dragons monster for each letter of the alphabet, from A to Z.
The quiz walks the letters in order. One correct name clears the current letter and moves you to the next letter.
The answer list is about 400 monsters of 5th edition. The list stays hidden. Your memory supplies the names, and the quiz checks them.
The quiz shows no monster art. Wizards of the Coast's artwork is not free to publish. The letters and your memory are the whole game.
How to play
Just start typing. The quiz checks your answer at every keystroke. There is no submit button.
A correct name fills the current letter's tile, and the walk moves to the next letter.
A true dragon answers with its colour: Red Dragon answers R, whatever its age. The age names count too.
Common misspellings and other names count: Gryphon, Illithid, Landshark.
Spelling is forgiving. Capitals, accents, hyphens and spaces are ignored.
A monster that starts with a different letter does nothing. Your text stays in the input, so you can finish the name you started.
The timer starts at your first keystroke and counts up. Give Up ends the run and shows example monsters for each letter you missed. Progress saves automatically.
What counts in this quiz
The answer list is every monster of the SRD 5.1, plus the famous monsters outside it: the beholder, the mind flayer, the displacer beast, the umber hulk, the githyanki, the yuan-ti, the slaadi, the demon lords and the big villains of the adventure books.
The ordinary animals and giant animals of the Monster Manual count: a bat answers B, an owl answers O.
The named characters with a stat block count: Strahd, Acererak, Vecna, Tiamat, Demogorgon, Orcus.
Every letter from A to Z has monsters in the list. X has the xorn.
Your score is the number of letters you clear. The highest score is 26.
The monster and spell data come from the System Reference Document 5.1 by Wizards of the Coast LLC, licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. The numbers are the 2014 rules.
What's not included, and why
Monsters outside the list are not accepted. A monster you know can be missing. That is scope, not an error.
Swarms and the ordinary people of the Monster Manual's appendix (commoner, guard, noble) are not in the list.
Player races with no monster stat block (tiefling, dragonborn, halfling) are not in the list.
Good to know
G is the richest letter: every giant animal, the giants, the golems, the goblins and the gnolls all start with it.
X, J, U and Z are the thin letters. Xorn, jackalwere, unicorn and zombie are the rescue answers most players reach for.
The beholder, the mind flayer and the displacer beast are not in the SRD: Wizards of the Coast keeps those names as its own. They are in this list all the same, because a name in a quiz is a question, not a text.
Dungeons & Dragons is a trademark of Wizards of the Coast. TRIVI.GG is not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast, and the quizzes show none of its artwork.
