Odd One Out Dungeons & Dragons: Rules & What Counts
Four names, one impostor: Dungeons & Dragons edition. Rounds ask which of these is NOT a class, NOT a fighter subclass, NOT a cantrip, NOT a 9th-level spell, NOT a chromatic dragon, NOT a layer of the Nine Hells, NOT a companion in Baldur's Gate 3 and, hardest of all, which of these is NOT a real monster.
The fakes are built to sting: Pathfinder classes that sound like D&D, 3rd edition feats and skills that 5th edition dropped, spells from World of Warcraft, demon lords mixed with archdevils, and medications that sound like monsters. Each round ends with the one-line truth.
How to play
Read the question. Then tap the name that does not belong.
You get one pick for each round. There are no second guesses.
The quiz marks your answer immediately. It also gives one line that explains the answer.
You start with three lives. The hearts in the top bar show the lives that you have.
A correct answer gives one point. A wrong answer costs one life.
A round that costs a life gives no points. The quiz continues with the next round.
The run ends when you lose the third life. It also ends when you play every round in the run.
Select "Review rounds" on the result screen to see each round that you played.
What counts in this quiz
The quiz holds 77 categories. One run uses 50 of them, reshuffled each play. Two runs do not ask the same set of questions.
Facts follow the 5th edition books: the 2014 and 2024 Player's Handbooks, the Monster Manual, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything and the campaign sourcebooks. A round that asks about an older edition says so.
A subclass round counts every official subclass published to date, from the Player's Handbook to the setting books. A playtest subclass is never on either side of a round.
Your score is the number of correct answers. The maximum score is 50, which is every round in one run.
A wrong answer costs one life. You keep the points that you have.
The timer counts up from your first pick. It only separates equal scores on the leaderboard.
What's not included, and why
No ambiguous picks. A subrace, a variant background and a subclass that only a playtest named stay out of every round.
A spell that changed school in the 2024 rules is not in a school round. A background the 2024 rules added is not an impostor in the background round.
The character rounds name the official companions of Baldur's Gate 3 and the members of Vox Machina and the Mighty Nein. Guest characters do not count.
Good to know
In 5th edition the succubus is neither a demon nor a devil. It is a fiend with no tag, and it fits in no fiend round.
Power Word Kill is an enchantment spell. The name sounds like necromancy, which is why the round asks.
Alteration became Transmutation in 3rd edition, and Invocation became Evocation at the same time.
Demogorgon, the Mind Flayer and Vecna are all Monster Manual names before they were Stranger Things villains.
