India States Quiz — Rules & What Counts
India has 28 states and 8 union territories. This quiz shows a blank map of India. You type the name of each state or territory, and the map colors that area in place.
The set mixes very large states, such as Rajasthan, with small territories, such as Chandigarh. The progress panel counts states and union territories separately.
How to play
Type names in any order. A correct name colors the area on the map at once.
You can start to type right away. You do not need to click the answer box first.
Current and former names both count. "Orissa" scores Odisha, and "Uttaranchal" scores Uttarakhand.
Common short names count. "Pondicherry" scores Puducherry, and "Kashmir" scores Jammu and Kashmir.
A timer tracks your run. The quiz saves your best score and best time.
If you are stuck, use the give up button. The map then shows the areas you missed.
What counts in this quiz
All 28 states and all 8 union territories — 36 answers in total.
The current official spellings and the well-known former names both count.
What's not included — and why
Districts and cities are not answers. Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata are not on the list — Delhi is, because Delhi is a union territory.
Good to know
Rajasthan is the largest state by area. Goa is the smallest.
Uttar Pradesh has more than 240 million people — more than any other country subdivision in the world.

Sikkim joined India in 1975. It was an independent kingdom before that.
