Gen 2 Pokémon Quiz — Johto Rules & What Counts
One hundred new Pokémon arrived with Gold, Silver, and Crystal. This quiz asks for all of them: #0152 Chikorita through #0251 Celebi, the Johto generation.
Gen 2 is sneaky-hard because so much of it hides in plain sight. Plenty of players file Crobat, Steelix, Scizor, and Blissey under "Kanto" — they're all Johto additions, evolutions grafted onto Gen 1 favorites. Add the first baby Pokémon and two legendary trios, and 100 names is tougher than it sounds.
How to play
- Start typing anywhere on the page — correct names reveal their sprites as you go, no clicking required.
- Hyphens are optional: "ho oh" and "hooh" both count for Ho-Oh, and capitalization never matters.
- The timer starts with your first input and your progress autosaves mid-run.
- Who's That Pokémon? mode blanks out all 100 sprites for a memory-only challenge.
- Give Up ends the quiz and reveals every Johto Pokémon you didn't get.
What counts in this quiz
- All 100 species numbered #0152–#0251 — the complete Johto Pokédex additions.
- Cross-generation evolutions belong here, not in Kanto: Crobat, Steelix, Scizor, Kingdra, Espeon, and Umbreon are all Gen 2 answers.
- The baby Pokémon (Pichu, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Togepi's line, and friends) count — they debuted in Johto even though they pre-evolve Gen 1 species.
- Unown is a single answer at #0201, whatever letter it's drawn as.
What's not included — and why
- Unown's 28 letter forms (A–Z plus ! and ?) are one Pokédex entry — you'll never be asked for a specific letter.
- Galarian Corsola isn't separate from Corsola — regional variants share numbers. Its evolution Cursola is a different species, but it lives in the Gen 8 quiz.
Good to know
- Feraligatr is missing an "o" because Gen 2 capped names at ten characters — "Feraligator" simply didn't fit.
- Ho-Oh was the first Pokémon shown in the anime, flying past Ash in episode one — two years before anyone could catch it.
- Shuckle has the highest Defense and Special Defense stats of any Pokémon ever made — 230 in each.
