France Départements Quiz: Rules & What Counts
France has 101 départements. This quiz shows a blank map of France. You type the name of each département, and the map colors that département in place.
The progress panel groups the départements into the 13 regions of metropolitan France and one overseas group. Most départements take their name from a river, a mountain range or a coast, such as Loire, Jura or Côtes-d'Armor.
How to play
Type names in any order. A correct name colors the département on the map at once.
You can start to type right away. You do not need to click the answer box first.
Accents are not required. "Ardeche" counts for Ardèche, and "Cotes d'Armor" counts for Côtes-d'Armor.
The number of a département counts too. Type "13" for Bouches-du-Rhône, "2A" for Corse-du-Sud or "974" for Réunion. A number below 10 needs its zero: "01" for Ain.
Old names and English names count. "Basses-Alpes" scores Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, "Côtes-du-Nord" scores Côtes-d'Armor, and "Upper Savoy" scores Haute-Savoie.
Some names begin a longer name, such as Loire and Loire-Atlantique. When you type "Loire", the quiz scores Loire at once and clears the box. Type the longer name again to score it. Both are on the map, so you lose nothing.
The départements around Paris are small. Zoom and pan the map to find Paris, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis and Val-de-Marne.
The map shows the five overseas départements in boxes west of the mainland, from Guadeloupe at the top to Mayotte at the bottom. The real islands are in the Caribbean Sea, in South America and in the Indian Ocean.
A timer tracks your run. The quiz saves your best score and best time.
If you are stuck, use the give up button. The map then shows the départements you missed.
What counts in this quiz
All 101 départements of France: the 96 of metropolitan France, Corsica included, and the 5 overseas départements (Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Réunion and Mayotte).
The names and numbers follow the INSEE code list. Corsica has the codes 2A and 2B.
The mainland map comes from SimpleMaps. The shapes of the overseas départements come from Natural Earth.
What's not included, and why
The 13 regions are not answers. They only group the départements in the progress panel. The French Regions quiz asks for the regions.
The Métropole de Lyon left the Rhône département in 2015. It is not a separate answer: the map draws Rhône with Lyon inside it.
The overseas collectivities, such as French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Saint-Martin and Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, are not départements and are not on the map.
A city is not an answer when its département has a different name. For example, Marseille is in Bouches-du-Rhône, and Bordeaux is in Gironde.
Good to know
The National Assembly created the first 83 départements in 1790. The aim was that nobody lived more than one day's ride from the capital of the département.
The numbers follow the alphabet: 01 is Ain and 95 is Val-d'Oise. The two Corsican départements took 2A and 2B in 1976, when Corse split in two.
Gironde is the largest département of metropolitan France. Paris is the smallest, and Nord has the most people.
French Guiana is the largest département of all. It is almost as large as Portugal, and most of it is rainforest.
Mayotte is the newest département. It became one in 2011.
